This David Gill design on a flat tract in Naperville incorporates man-made mounds and ponds, liberal bunkering and large, terraced greens with the almost ever present winds to create a golf course that will challenge any golfer. Although the front side seems somewhat more benign than the back nine, there is plenty of trouble lurking out of bounds, in the water, or in the many sand traps guarding the fairways and protecting the greens. "Barber poles" at 150 yards out are good guides for calculating how much club to use from the tee; but many are situated in the tightest spots in the landing areas. Holes 15, 16 and 17 are three toughies on your way in. The shortish 15th plays at 388 from the tips to a narrow fairway with sand looming right and water left. The 2-tiered green slopes severely back to front and is protected by a large trap right front and severe slope into a wooded hazard at the rear. The 16th, a par 4 at 456 yards from the back tees, requires a big, straight tee ball to a peninsular fairway. A long iron second shot over the water hazard that guards the left side brings OB into play as well. At 196 yards from the Green Tees (Championship), #17 is as an intimidating a 3-par as can be found. Guarded front left, back and right by water, only a feathery shot will hold the green. A bar-railed veranda and well-stocked grillroom overlook the putting clock, the 9th green and the 10th tee. A Centerstage twosome played a late April (2003) round in three hours (beginning at 10:30 a.m.), with a large contingent of ladies well out in front of our pairing. They certainly did not slow us up, but we found a lot of little unraked footprints in the traps. Ladies (and the big-footed gentlemen, as well) let's not get in such a hurry that you don't forget to RAKE THE TRAPS!
